An EV charger installation gives your electric car a fast, safe place to plug in at home. A Level 2 charger fills your battery in hours, not days. We install them all over Central NJ.
When you call Harrelson Electric, you get Bruce. He is a Master Electrician with NJ License 15918. He does the estimate and the install himself. No subcontractors.
Level 2 vs Level 1, in plain terms
Every EV comes with a Level 1 cord. It plugs into a normal wall outlet. It works, but it is slow. It adds about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. Charging overnight may only give you 40 miles.
A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, like your dryer or stove. It adds 20 to 40 miles of range per hour. You wake up to a full battery every day. For most drivers, Level 2 is the right call.
Chargers we install
We install all the major brands. Each one works with the right setup for your car.
- Tesla Wall Connector. Best for Tesla owners. Works with other EVs too using an adapter.
- ChargePoint Home Flex. A smart charger that works with every EV.
- Grizzl-E. A tough, simple unit that works with all EVs.
What the install involves
A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit. That means its own breaker and its own wire run from the panel to the charger. Nothing else shares that line.
Bruce mounts the charger where you want it. Most folks pick the garage wall near where the car parks. He runs the wire, sets the breaker, and tests the whole thing. Then he shows you how to use it.
Does your panel have room
This is the big question. About 40 percent of homes need a panel upgrade before a Level 2 charger can go in. A charger pulls a lot of power. Your panel has to handle it on top of everything else.
Bruce checks this during the estimate. He does a load calculation. If your panel has room, great, we just add the circuit. If it does not, he tells you straight. A 200-amp upgrade may be needed first. He can do both jobs and save you a second trip.
NJ rebates can cut the cost
New Jersey offers real money back on EV chargers. We help you claim it. Here is what is out there.
| Program | What you can get |
|---|---|
| Charge Up NJ | 250 dollars toward a home charger |
| PSE&G Make-Ready | Up to 5,000 dollars for eligible installs |
| JCP&L EV Driven | Rebate support for JCP&L customers |
| Federal Form 8911 | 30 percent of the cost, up to 1,000 dollars |
Permit and inspection
NJ requires a permit for an EV charger circuit. It falls under the Uniform Construction Code. The township inspector signs off when the work is done. We pull the permit and meet the inspector. You do not have to chase any of it.
A permit also protects you. It means the work was checked by the town. That matters if you sell the house. It also matters for your insurance. A clean, permitted install is worth the small added step.
Hardwired or plug-in
Most chargers can be hardwired or plugged into a 240-volt outlet. A hardwired unit is fixed to the wall and the circuit. A plug-in unit uses a NEMA outlet so you can unplug it.
Plug-in is handy if you might move the charger or take it with you. Hardwired is cleaner and can run at a higher power level on some units. Bruce will tell you which fits your car and your spot.
What an EV charger install costs
Most Level 2 installs in Central NJ run between 1,200 and 3,500 dollars. The price depends on a few things.
- How far the charger sits from the panel
- Whether your panel has room or needs an upgrade
- Which charger you choose
- Indoor garage versus an outdoor mount
How long the install takes
Most EV charger installs are a half-day job. If your panel has room, Bruce runs the circuit, mounts the unit, and tests it in a few hours. You are charging that same day.
If you need a panel upgrade first, plan for a full day. Bruce can do both in one visit. That saves you a second trip and a second permit run.
