Pool and hot tub wiring done right
Pool and hot tub wiring is some of the most code-strict work an electrician does. Water and electricity are a deadly mix. The rules around pools and spas exist because people have been hurt. Bruce has been a Master Electrician since 1988. He knows the pool and spa code. He pulls the permit and gets the work inspected. When you call Harrelson Electric, you get Bruce. No subcontractors show up to your house.
Below is what goes into a safe pool or hot tub hookup.
Dedicated circuits
A pool pump or a hot tub needs its own circuit. It cannot share power with other things in your house. Sharing power trips breakers and can overheat wires.
We size the wire and breaker to the load. A hot tub often needs 240 volts. We run a new circuit straight from your panel to the equipment. The pump, heater, and any other gear get the right power.
GFCI protection
GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. It watches the flow of power. If even a tiny amount leaks the wrong way, it shuts off in a fraction of a second. That fast shutoff can save a life.
Code requires GFCI protection on pool and spa circuits. We put GFCI on the pump, the heater, and any outlets near the water. Every outdoor outlet near a pool needs GFCI too.
Equipotential bonding
This is the part most homeowners have never heard of. It is also one of the most important.
Bonding ties all the metal parts around your pool together with a copper wire. The pump, the ladder, the metal frame, the rebar in a concrete deck, and the water itself all get connected. This is called an equipotential bond.
Why does it matter? It keeps everything at the same voltage. Without bonding, a small stray voltage can build up. A swimmer touching a metal rail could get a shock. Bonding stops that. Code requires it around pools and spas. We install the bonding grid the right way.
Disconnect within sight
Code says you need a way to cut power to the pool or spa equipment fast. The shutoff has to be within sight of the equipment. It also has to be a safe distance from the water.
We install a proper disconnect switch. If something goes wrong, you or a service tech can kill the power right there. No running to the basement panel.
Hot tub 240 volt hookup
Most hot tubs run on 240 volts. They pull a lot of power for the heater and jets. We run a dedicated 240 volt circuit with a GFCI disconnect near the tub.
We follow the maker's wiring spec for your model. We bond the tub frame and any nearby metal. Then we test it before you fill it.
Outdoor outlets and lighting
A pool area often needs more than just pump power. You may want outlets for a radio, a phone charger, or a vacuum. You may want lights so you can see at night.
We add weatherproof outlets with GFCI and in-use covers. We can wire low voltage landscape lights or pool deck lights. All of it is rated for wet and outdoor use.
Permit and inspection
Pool and spa electrical work needs an NJ UCC permit. We pull it. The town sends an inspector to check the work. The inspector looks at the bonding, the GFCI, the disconnect, and the wire sizes.
We do not skip this step. An inspected job protects you. It also matters for insurance and for selling your home later. We work with PSE&G and JCP&L when a power change is needed.
Why hire a pro for this
Pool wiring is not a do-it-yourself job. The bonding alone is easy to get wrong. A missed bond or a bad GFCI can turn your pool into a hazard. Bruce does it by the book every time.
